Vintage Sign (Save!)

I have a thing for vintage signs. I had driven past this dilapidated building several times, always noting to come back someday to photograph its broken neon sign. On a recent cloudy morning after school drop-off, I did just that. If you follow the Flotsam of the Mind Facebook page, you may have seen a companion photo of the other end of this building.

I was shocked to see that a laundry business is still operating inside. This building looks like it's been abandoned for some time.

Flotsam of the Mind - Vintage Laundry Sign

I chose to edit this photo in black and white because I thought it better fit the age of the building, sign, and typography. To me, this photo could have been taken decades ago.

If you too have a thing for vintage signs, be sure to browse Marc Shur Photography. Much of his website is devoted to signs, and I love that he's broken down his photo galleries into Bowling Alley Signs, Hotel & Motel Signs, Liquor & Bar Sign, and the like.

What do you think? Do you see the beauty in the old, or do you only see old?

  1. I love old signs too and pass this one regularly. I also love those phantom signs on buildings that are left from signs painted on brick that have faded over time.
